Who We Are
Founded January 19, 2012
We are dedicated to providing opportunities and recreation to kids in the communities. We accomplish this through the efforts of college and high school students. We believe strongly in the skills and life lessons athletics can teach. Participation in sports provides kids with important opportunities to grow physically, mentally and socially. The original student group that founded S.P.O.R.T.S. wanted to put on free athletic camps for kids in the inner city. Today, we understand many organizations and groups already are pursuing that same mission. So, we aim to mentor college and high school students who want to leave a lasting impact on their community in multiple ways. Our medium in which we accomplish this goal is through athletics. Whether it be helping a like minded organization or planning their own camp, we help the students create SMART goals and a strategic action plan to complete their efforts. One day they will be able to take these real world lessons into their future professions having had the experience on how to solve real world problems. Through their efforts we continue to Play It Forward by finding the need in the athletic community to help solve the problem.
S.P.O.R.T.S. effort tackles three main fronts to carry out our mission.
- We encourage college students to host free local camps and for the kids in the community
- We raise money to build a scholarship fund to send kids to other sporting camps. To receive this money, the children take a pledge to Play It Forward in their community.
- We work with students to help promote and fund, through our grant process, like minded organization to help fill areas of need.
Our goal is to create a community that looks after itself by bringing everyone together through our events. We understand the future success of our communities lies in the hands of our children. Upon completion of our efforts, the children will be leading the charge in Playing It Forward to a brighter and more caring community.
To accomplish this goal we will rely heavily on our student based mentality. Being a student focused organization allows us to create the closest relationships between our mentors and participants. This dynamic creates the most comfortable environment for kids by utilizing a child’s natural admiration for older students. We hope to assist in the child’s quest to find their own meaning through the world of S.P.O.R.T.S. so one day they can Play It Forward.
